With the release of the latest five episodes of Netflix’s Break Point, fans got a closer look at Frances Tiafoe.

The American was featured in Episode 9, which focussed on Tiafoe’s dream run to the semi-finals of the 2022 US Open. The fans’ favourite not only provided the viewer a behind-the-scenes look at his magnetic personality, but revealed why he believes his efforts on Tour are about more than just tennis.

Tiafoe spoke to ATPTour.com late last year about what it was like filming with the Netflix crews, being a “jokester” and more.

Was there anything they filmed that you wished they didn’t?
I probably said some off-the-cuff stuff, everybody probably did. [It was] just me being me. I like to clown around and joke around, but they were pretty good with it. ‘Don’t worry about it.’

They just wanted me to be me, so they were never trying to catch me on something. They did a great job. They were there as much and as little as I wanted them to be and I’m happy this opportunity came.

What was most surprising about the whole Netflix experience?
You kind of know what it’s going to be, cameras being around. It takes some adjusting, but nothing really surprised me. At first how big the crew was. They roll deep and I’m assuming for every person it was the same. That was probably the only thing.

How long did it take to get used to it?
It was definitely different, but you want to be as authentic as possible. I actually quite enjoyed it, especially that some of the best moments of my life, they were able to get on film. That’s super important to me. I had no problem with it after a while. The beginning stages, maybe it was a little tough.

You mentioned the crew never filmed anything you didn’t want. How did you set the guidelines for that?
I was open with them from the beginning. I was like, ‘Look, I’m a jokester. I’m probably going to say some stuff that can’t be on air.’ They were cool with it.

And you get cool with the guys after a while. They’re with you so much, you get cool with them and then they also start to know and they’re like, ‘Alright, don’t worry about that. I won’t get you there.’ We had some funny car rides at the US Open saying dumb stuff and they knew just to keep it here.

What was the experience having them document such a big moment of your life in New York, where you made the semi-finals?
It’s crazy. You never know when a moment like that is going to happen so to have a moment documented like that, truly blessed. Don’t want to say it came randomly but it felt like so. To do something like that so big was wild, so I’m happy.

How do you plan on watching the show? Are you going to binge it?
Absolutely, I’m going to watch the whole thing right away. I think that has to be done. I want to see how it turns out. I think everybody does, right?

How much do you want to watch it for the other players? Are you curious about that at all?
Yeah, yeah! I want to see what they did, how often they had them around. For sure, I think this is great for the game, so it’s not just really about me. It’s great for the game, moving the game forward. I’m happy I was part of it and some other guys got a chance to be part of it as well.

If there’s one player you’d want to see Netflix follow around who would it be and why?
I’m excited to see Taylor [Fritz] on there, just knowing him and how he is. I’m excited to see how he is with the cameras the whole time. I think it’s going to be pretty funny because he’s a funny guy.

How nice is it to have your whole team, your girlfriend and everyone get the shine?
For sure, for sure. Absolutely. Just having them there in general is obviously great, but then to be part of the journey and stuff like that, especially moments I had as of late that were so big for me and everybody else, I’m happy that they were there.

What’s a Netflix show you haven’t watched you need to get on?
Ayan Broomfield: Season Three of Love Is Blind.

Frances Tiafoe: Like three years ago, me and Ayan [watched it]. I probably wouldn’t have watched it without my girl. I got hooked on it and season two came out, my brother told me to watch it. Me and Ayan locked in again. It’s just fun. You watch different stuff with your girl than what you watch by yourself. It’s nice to watch it with her and just chill out. It’s good.
